Review: Fragments of a Unicorn's Soul

Fragments of a Unicorn's Soul
Fragments of a Unicorn's Soul by J.R. Loveless

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

2.5 stars. Great beginning, but the story was much to short to do the plot justice. I felt like the ending was rushed which ruined my enjoyment.

Review: Divinity

Divinity
Divinity by Bryl R. Tyne

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Very well written short story (it didn't feel short while reading it) about a commitment shy vampire and his current co-worker who seems to be weaving some sort of spell on him (with lollipops!).

Not sure if these are considered spoilers, but just in case;

There was an undercurrent of...something that I just couldn't put my finger on, but worked so well with this story; I think it was Mesmer/Anton's nefarious plans for Martin. Though Martin was without his own set of issues, since the story is told with his POV, I felt more for him than Mesmer. I wasn't too sure I wanted the main characters to even be together by the end; it was definitely a love/hate relationship! It will be an interesting eternity for these two, that's for sure. :)

18% Gray
18% Gray by Anne Tenino

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What didn't I love about this book? Okay, some of the high-tech words threw me off, but that's it! Enjoyed the futuristic look at a divided United States, loooved Matt & James (all that delicious tension, the chemistry was smoking hot!), and James mutant brain is awesome. Giggled in quite a few places (the 'think I swallowed a bug' was seriously an lol moment...good thing I was all by myself at the time and noone could laugh at me!) and who didn't get a kick out of the horse and nympho nun?

So glad this is the first in a series so I can visit these characters (plus new ones!) and world again!

Stowaway
Stowaway by Becky Black

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

2.5-3 stars. Light, fun sci-fi story. I had issues with the characters though. I thought Raine went back and forth between wanting Kit to wanting to punish himself for wanting Kit for too long. And I think I'm in the minority here, but I never really warmed up to Kit.

The writing was good though and kept me engaged until the end. I will be trying more of this author's work.

HEA or HFN?

I just read a book with a HFN ending (happy for now). I'm not too sure how I feel about it. On one hand, the book was very well written, but I was really disappointed with the ending. Actually there's a line that one of the characters think "it couldn't last forever, but in the moment, he was content."

It kind of ruined things for me. I'm definitely a HEA reader. I want to leave a book knowing my heros are going to be together and still going strong (and having hot smex!) long after I finish reading.

Meh...just my opinion anyways. I wonder how everyone else feels about this?

Review: Room at the Top

Room at the Top
Room at the Top by Jane Davitt

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3-3.5 stars. Very good writing (and hot smex scenes!), but I'm more of a HEA girl than the HFN ending that we got. I actually felt sorry for Liam because I didn't feel that Austin and Jay really loved him. More like they loved the idea of having him around with the benefits of sex thrown in. I'm sure they were fond of him, but they definitely put their relationship first and with a threesome book, I felt they should be a bit more equal on the feelings with each other.

But, like any other review, that's just my opinion. :)

Review: Bareback

Bareback
Bareback by Chris Owen

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I'll give this one 2 stars because it did make me cry like a freakin' baby. I read this awhile back and never reviewed because to this day I still get ticked off thinking about this book. (which is kudos to the author, I guess)

The beginning of this book was good, though I have to admit, I started skimming the sex scenes. There is just so many. And then, of course, the big scene that everyone knows about happens; I'm sorry, I don't think Jake would EVER be able to forgive Tor for what he did. (and for how long!) And the reasoning on why Tor did it? Just pisses me off when I think about it.

This seems to be on a lot of people's favorites shelf, but I just don't see it. Not recommended unless your a fan of cheaters and loads of smexxin' before that.

Watching 'Masters of Horror' (though I've seen this one before) and messing around with blogger. I uploaded a really old livejournal banner that I made with a sexy cat!boy. (gotta love the yaoi!)

Really wish I had the time (and motivation) to play with photoshop more often. My skills are pretty rusty! Maybe I should do some fanart...

Blah, blah, blah

I started this blog because I'm such a lurker on other people's blogs (oh hi! *waves*). Thought I'd start posting about myself here and there. Not that there's much of interest, but whatev. ;)

So, I'm 33 and a voracious reader of m/m romance. I haven't read much m/f (or mainstream) romance in quite awhile. (The last one I read I kept wondering where the other penis was in the love scenes!) My favorite genre is cop or paranormal.

I have two beautiful kids; 9 year old son (we'll call him 'boy' heh) and 22 month old baby girl, (we'll call her 'baby'). Madly in love with my fiance. We've been together for 13 years. (yeesh!) Planned on getting married last year, but actually got preggo first, so that's been put on hold for a bit. I work at a family restaurant (with ice cream) as a supervisor, waitress, cook, all around slave to the dollar. I do like my job, but omg, you meet some crazy ass people working in the service industry. (which I'll blog about here and there)

I recently moved. We're now leasing a house...which I love, love, love. We have a real fireplace!! You can find me on Goodreads or on Google +.

3 stars. I'm enjoying this series. The characters are interesting and the smexxin' was hot. I did have a few instances where I wasn't sure which character was speaking at the time. I didn't connect with these characters like the others in the series, but I'm still looking forward to reading the next installment.

Fairytales Slashed: Volume 3
Fairytales Slashed: Volume 3 by Megan Derr

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 stars rounded up to 5 because the good stories in this were just that good. :)

Rasnake - 5 stars (my favorite of them all)
Pretty - 2.5--3 stars. Started off good, but I didn't really like the last of it. The hero who changes also seemed to change his attitude (and not for the better).
He Shall Go To The Ball - 2.5-3 stars. Cute, but the just sort of ended. I would of liked to have seen what happened next.
Greenwood - 4 stars
Moth to the Flame - 4.5 stars. (this had some funny moments that were an unexpected bonus...the ninja's were awesome!)

Review: Destinies in Darkness, Part 1

Destinies in Darkness, Part 1
Destinies in Darkness, Part 1 by Scarlet Hyacinth

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 stars. When I first bought this, I just didn't get into it so I pushed it to one side (or in this case, archived it on my kindle and forgot I had it). I finally got around to reading 'Over the Edge' (the second story of this series) and thought maybe I couldn't get into this one was because you needed to read them in order. While you probably should read them in order, this could of been a stand-alone (by itself). I'm sure it will all tie together in the next two novels (You meet Keenan and Eric briefly in the previous novel), and I'm eager to see how it all does. I really want to know more about Jean Luc (and Aiden and the professor!).

I already picked up the next book and can't wait to read it.

Over the Edge
Over the Edge by Scarlet Hyacinth

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5 stars rounded up to 4. I actually needed the beginning to remind me of the previous book! And after that? Whew! Gabriel on Earth was great. It was good to see him mature (and have cool powers!). Lost some of it's charm with the abrupt ending. I felt like Kalin and Cade resolved everything way too fast.

Looking forward to the next part of the series.

Beautiful Forever by Diana Copland

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

2-2.5 stars. I enjoyed most of this story until the last part. Suddenly time skips forward 6 months to a year (and how dare Brady not get over being turned into a vampire in that time! /sarcasm) and a few paragraphs or so later, it's fifty years into the future!

I think if this was a longer novel, that time could of been fleshed out and made the whole story much better.

Really enjoyed this glimpse into the not so distant future. Loved reading this little bit of their lives. You can feel the tension simmering below everything. Tony's thought of Mac getting injured in the line of duty and him not finding out until he saw it on the news hit me. Here's hoping they tackle that issue when we get to read more of them.

Salad on the Side
Salad on the Side by Karenna Colcroft

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

2 stars. Those werewolves really did like to talk! Way too much about the pack (to me, anyways). I liked Kyle, but didn't really like Tobias at all.

Possible spoiler but... poor Kyle almost gets killed, turns into a werewolf (after 3 days of being unconscious) and everyone jumps down his throat about the rules of being a member of the pack. Give the man a breather! He had no time to really digest what even happened to him!

I did love the idea of a vegan werewolf though. :)

Review: The Balance of Silence

The Balance of Silence
The Balance of Silence by S. Reesa Herberth

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

2 stars. Really good read which had me interested the whole time...until the end.

All of a sudden Ducks can talk! He doesn't talk to Riv in months, Riv gets shot, and then boom! Ducks is back in his life and can talk now so everything is okay! Ducks ignored Riv for months and was maybe thinking of never talking to him again (even after he got his voice back) but that wasn't even touched on in the shortest reunion ever. I wanted Ducks to actually work to get with Riv, but Riv just makes it way too easy for him. (and I really liked his character too)

And note; there is no sex in this book. I'm not saying I need to read a sex scene everytime I read a book, (I can name over 10 that actually have too many sex scenes off the top of my head) but you just don't really feel the chemistry between them all that much. Some hot kisses and that's about it.

Very disappointing conclusion after being such a good read.

Review: Packing Leather

Packing Leather by Kim Dare

3 stars. Nice, sexy story about two friends who work together finally getting together. My only niggle would be that the first time they have sex, Darren doesn't allow Jamie to orgasm. They've been dancing around their attraction for months and then he isn't allowed to finish? I thought that was a bit cruel for no real reason other than to show his dominance. (and especially after Jamie had the guts to jump headfirst into bondage!)

But, really, that's only my personal opinion. Future readings may change my mind. :)

Hard as Teak
Hard as Teak by Margie Church

2.5 - 3 stars. I liked the book, but I wanted to like the characters more than I did. Plus, I could of done without the m/f scenes in the beginning. (so hardcore m/m fans like myself, be warned!)

No real angst; Kevin had doubts and concerns about himself, but he dealt with them rationally and relatively pain-free (the most emotion he showed was regret at hurting his ex-girlfriend). I had a harder time liking Teak for some reason.

The writing was good. I would read more of this author's m/m books in the future (providing I know about those sneaky m/f scenes!).

This was my reread of the new edition. And it's still such an amazing story that sucked me in like I haven't already read it a bunch of times. Kick ass world building and characters that just draw you in and keep you turning the pages.

I definitely enjoyed the added scene between Dieter and Beraht at the end. *grins*

I think if the author put together a book of just short stories of them two I might actually die of a fangasm. ;)

Really though, I can't recommend this highly enough.

(ETA - Currently rereading the newer edition)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Really enjoyed this story of mortal enemies turned passionate lovers. A lot of hot smex, but it furthered the story along. I thought the world of shifters and werewolves was intriguing and I'd love to read more about it.

As a reader, the author hit quite a few of my kinks. Besides the smokin' smex scenes, I love me a possessive alpha male and his prettier lover. (yes, cliche, I know, but I can't help what I like) Add in the fact that the shifter could kick his ass if he didn't want to submit? Even better. ;)

Will be looking forward to reading more from this author!

A Valentine's date that was about leather rather than roses.

I thought that line summed up this short story nicely. Ricky, the newbie sub, mistakes Jack as his new master because he's wearing a hat that his would-be dom said he'd be wearing. Shenanigans ensue.

This was quite the entertaining read! The cover immediately caught my eye, and after reading a few positive reviews, I finally bought this one yesterday. (really, though, isn't the cover amazing?)

The Japanese setting seems as if the author did her homework (I'm no expert and have never been myself), nicely detailed and informative without overwhelming. I wasn't sure what to expect from the yokai, but 'Fingers' definately stole every scene he was in! Hands down, my favorite character. The karoake scene alone was worth the price of the book! (well, that and how poor Hank kept overhearing people wondering if his curtains matched his carpet! *snerks*)
